Learning Objectives

Summarize the core principles of motivational interviewing and therapeutic alliance, and learn how to apply them effectively in clinical practice to enhance patient autonomy and improve outcomes.
Identify key run-specific questions for the subjective assessment to ascertain a runner's overall health, well-being, and potential risk factors for bone stress injuries and other adverse events.
Describe the biomechanics, electromyography (EMG), kinematics, and kinetics of both walking and running, emphasizing the critical differences between these two forms of locomotion.
Recognize the severity and contributing factors of running injuries through red flag screenings and utilize the Modified Wilk Scale for staging and classifying these injuries.
Introduce "The Johnson Table Torsion Test" and its related clinical practice pattern to enhance clinical decision-making, manual interventions, and exercise prescription when runners present with unilateral, closed chain, lower extremity complaints.
Review essential physical performance tests (PPTs) specific to the performance demands of running to establish baseline capacity, screen for soft tissue injuries, and assess for bone stress injuries (BSIs).
Define high-risk versus low-risk BSIs, management strategies, and expected recovery timelines based on bone biology and imaging.
Present and discuss drills for running mastery, focusing on functional exercise progressions that incorporate neuromotor training, compound movements, and power/plyometrics.
Conduct a comprehensive running gait analysis using "The S's of Treadmill Running Analysis," combined with the Runeasi platform, to establish a qualitative and quantitative understanding of a runner's signature, with specific retraining interventions for different scenarios.
Develop and implement a structured return-to-running program using a graded exposure model to safely reintroduce runners to training and competition, focusing on lower limb tendinopathy and BSIs.
Design loading programs that integrate running and resistance training for individuals of varying ages and abilities, applying autoregulatory principles to optimize outcomes specific to lower limb tendinopathy and BSIs.
