One of the most practical and cost effective approaches to rigging up a home ice pack is to use a ziplock bag filled with the original green Palmolive dish detergent. The beauty of this particular ice pack is that you probably already have the supplies in your home and it contours well to various regions of the body.

Here are the ingredients:

  • Ziplock bags – gallon or quart size are most efficient
  • Palmolive detergent – it MUST be the original “green” detergent
  • Freezer

Depending upon the size of the treatment area, you will need to use either a gallon or quart size Ziplock bag.  Fill the bag 1/3 full of Palmolive detergent.  Push remaining air out of the bag and seal.  Place the first bag in a second bag in order to ensure a quality seal thereby preventing leakage.  Place in the freezer for at least 45 minutes to one hour.  The detergent will gel as it freezes yielding a malleable and quality ice pack, which is reusable.

Thanks Joel. This was actually the first time I learned of how to make an ice pack in this manner.
